Jenny Craig:
Brendan, we used to think of exercise as an intense activity that we had to endure for at least a half hour to reap any health benefits. But no more. Now we know we can accumulate exercise over the course of the day and get the same health benefits as "squeezing" in that 30-minute workout. During breaks at work, take a few short 5-minute walks. Add a brisk 10- or 15-minute walk before or after work and you can see how easy you can accumulate 30 minutes of exercise.

Brendan:
Great!

M Swann:
If you're leading a very active life with a high rate of physical exercise, is it important to maintain a certain minimum level of fat intake? Similarly, is there such a thing as too little fat in the body?

Jenny Craig:
In response to the question about the human body's need for a little dietary fat, it's true that you need a certain amount of fat to maintain your tissues, hair, skin, nails, etc. That's why experts generally recommend 20-30% fat calories, on average.

Karen:
Diet talk usually centers around food, but it seems to me that losing weight is as much about your head as your stomach. Jenny, do you have any strategies to prepare yourself psychologically to lose weight? For example, should you weigh yourself every day to give yourself a feeling of accomplishment?

Jenny Craig:
Karen, you bring up an excellent point. Healthy weight management involves a healthy relationship with food, an active lifestyle, and creating more balance in your life. That translates to measuring your success with a variety of factors besides weight -- such as greater energy, reduced cholesterol, and greater self-confidence. Weighing yourself (just ONCE a week) is only one measurement of success.

Samantha:
I've been looking for your Diabetes Cookbook for my son, but I can't find it anywhere. Do you know where I can get a copy?

Jenny Craig:
Samantha, my Diabetes Cookbook can be purchased at any Jenny Craig Centre or by calling toll-free 1-800-423-1321. The book's publisher, Oxmoor House, recently offered the Diabetes Cookbook to major retailers. If you weren't able to find a copy before, you might look again or see if your local bookstore can order you a copy.

Muffin:
When I go out to a restaurant, how can I tell if something on the menu is low fat? Like is "grilled" low fat? What if they say "oh, it's pan-fried?" Is that really less fat than deep fried? Help!

Jenny Craig:
Muffin, you might not be able to tell from a menu whether or not a food item is low-fat. That's why it's always a good idea to ask your waiter how the food is prepared. Generally, "pan-fried" foods are higher in fat than a grilled or broiled item.

Brendan:
How much protein do we need in our diets?

Jenny Craig:
Brendan, the absolute amount of protein you need in your diet depends on your calorie level. But most health experts recommend 12-20% of total calories. If you are losing weight or building muscle mass, you may need the higher end of the recommeded range.

Brendan:
Thanks, Jenny!

Chloe:
Do you have any favorite healthy restaurants?

Jenny Craig:
Chloe, the good news is that I've found I can eat out in nearly any restaurant as long as I make the right choices and practice moderation.
