 The Bartender Interviews: Alex Guzman

The Algonquin
Experience: 23 years

Signature drink?
The Matilda (named after a cat by the same name that we keep around as a sort of mascot) -- dark Bacardi, Midori, Champagne

Most popular drink?
Vodka tonic

Most unusual request?
People sometimes order a drink that I find somewhat unusual called the Prince of Wales -- Harvey's Bristol Cream, Champagne, vodka, grenadine

Best thing about being a bartender?
Meeting interesting people from all over the world

Worst thing about being a bartender?
In Europe, the tip is usually included. So, when you work in a place that caters to a lot of Europeans, three-quarters of them never leave a tip because they don't realize that service isn't included.

Favorite drink?
Beer (every once in a while)

Favorite bar story?
One time a guy came up to the bar and asked me if I could recommend a drink. I asked what kind of a drink he was in the mood for and suggested that a strong warming drink might be nice on this particularly cold winter evening. After several minutes of discussion, he agreed -- so I recommended a cognac or rusty nail (Drambuie, Scotch-whiskey, ice cubes). The man then proceeded to order a "strong" coca-cola with a completely serious face.
