Meeting House

1701 Octavia Street
San Francisco, California 94109-4326
ph: 415.922.6733

Shaker furnishings and a friendly staff set the simple, pleasant tone of the Meeting House. It is located on a corner and has big picture windows, so you can sit inside in the calm and watch the passers-by on busy Bush Street. The menu is modern and impressive. Pan-seared halibut over basil mashed potatoes is perfectly executed, and the roasted chicken has a sweetish, smoky bite. Save room for the lovely seasonal desserts, which recently included nectarine and blueberry shortcake. With culinary talents focused on an authentic American and Californian fare emphasizing organic foods and desserts, this is a fine dining restaurant. Expect the average entrée to cost in the range of $20 to $30, and people generally dress casual, but fashionable.

Atmosphere: Meeting House was constructed in the 1880`s, was formerly Octavia Street Apothecary and Laundry and later Robert-Restaurant Francais. In 1996 Karlinsky returned the building to its original American charm.

Architectually, the restaurant is in an historic structure. The facility has an authentic and traditional early 1800`s - late 1800`s style décor. The interior is accented by beige tones, enhanced by flowers and plants, and the lighting is by the glow of candle flame. There are hardwood floors, and this is a white tableclothe restaurant.

The establishment is small with seating for 40 people, and is romantic and lively and patroned by all kinds of people. Table talk is no problem - noise level here is moderate. Also, you`ll notice that there is a visible kitchen.

More Reasons to Go: Meeting House is appropriate (if not ideal) for birthdays, anniversaries, other romantic evenings and private parties; also, the establishment is often frequented prior the theatre.

Eating & Drinking: Open for dinner. There`s a Sunday brunch. The menu here at Meeting House changes on a seasonal basis depending on freshness and availability. The cuisine here is influenced by freshness and flavor. Most ingredients are supplied by selected Bay Area ranchers and produce growers. The menu draws its inspiration from the heritage of American regional cooking. Recipes have been considered Classic American. Some of the more popular menu items include: the shrimp johnny cakes and the grilled pork chop.

Both beer and wine are served, and you`ll find that there is an excellent wine list.

Notable Mention: Being a good value for your dollar.

About the Chef: Joanna Karlinsky is the proprietor of The Meetinghouse. Joanna studied at the Culinary Institute of America where she graduated with honors. She cooked in Boston, New York, Arizona, Iowa, Pennsylvania, and Washington before settling into the Bay Area.

The Management: is gracious and accomodating. You always feel welcome and like part of the family. It`s nice to see the chef/owner hosting as if you were in her home.

Details to Note: Reservations are required on weekends. Carryout is available. Catering for various events can be arranged (call for details & quotes). Smoking is not permitted. It should be noted that this is an adult oriented restaurant. Parking has been arranged for customers.
