Toast

Toast is perhaps the simplest and most popular of comfort foods. It is considered soothing to upset stomachs, is one of the first solid foods given to babies, and is a great way to use bread that's a little past its prime. Even city-dwellers living in even the most cramped conditions are likely to find room for a toaster on their kitchen counters.

In 18th century England, even in wealthy households, toast was usually made by the breakfaster herself. Special toasting forks were provided so that the bread could be held over the flame in the fireplace until it reached the desired degree of golden brown.
