  • Because it is a leaner meat option, turkey is perfect for backyard chefs and novices that want low-fat, high-protein, low-sodium and easily adaptable new recipe ideas.

  • People are tired of the same old barbecue options! The National Turkey Federation notes that people want to dazzle and impress family and friends with newly grilled items and without increased cooking preparation.

  • The new high-tech barbecues make rotisserie turkey a snap. According to Gary Bertassi of the Grillers Hall of Flame in Massachusetts, these grills have new rear burner options that lead to reduced flare-ups, minimal clean-up and increased room underneath the rotating turkey for sauces or marinades to baste and flavor the turkey.

  • Emerging trends: Whole turkeys that are smoked or wood-grilled are moister, and they pack a powerful wallop of flavor. And, according to Brian Heinecke, certified barbecue judge for the National Barbecue Association, "Cooking with whole turkeys is becoming more popular as it allows for creativity to stuff the turkey's cavity with seasonings -- including citrus -- for additional flavor. And they make for delicious next-day smoked recipe suggestions like turkey sandwiches and salads."
